What is Visceral Manipulation?

Visceral Manipulation is a gentle manual therapy for normalizing organ functionality, mobility, and motility. It focuses on the internal organs, their connective tissue attachments, and the way they relate to posture, breathing, pain, and movement.

The organs are supported by fascia, ligaments, membranes, and other connective tissues. Restrictions in these tissues may develop after surgery, injury, inflammation, illness, stress, or long-term postural habits. Visceral Manipulation uses precise, gentle touch to encourage better motion in and around these structures.

This system was developed by Jean-Pierre Barral, D.O.

How Visceral Manipulation Works

Healthy movement is important throughout the body, including the organs and their surrounding connective tissues. The viscera need to glide and move in relationship to the diaphragm, spine, pelvis, ribs, and abdominal wall.

During a session, I use gentle palpation and listening to identify areas of restriction or altered motion. Treatment may involve subtle pressure and slow, specific techniques directed toward the abdomen, diaphragm, rib cage, pelvis, or related areas.

Visceral Manipulation & Abdominal Massage

Some people searching for abdominal massage are looking for relief from abdominal tension, constipation, digestive discomfort, or restriction through the trunk. Visceral Manipulation may be a more specific approach.

Rather than simply massaging the abdominal muscles, VM works with the mobility and motility of the internal organs and their fascial or ligamentous connections. Pressure is usually light to moderate, precise, and guided by the tissue response.

My Approach to Visceral Manipulation

My approach is shaped by my broader background in Rolfing® Structural Integration and manual therapy. I look at the abdomen and organs as part of a larger structural and functional system.

Tension around the diaphragm, abdomen, or pelvis may affect how the spine moves, how the ribs expand, how the pelvis organizes, or how someone experiences posture and breathing. In practice, Visceral Manipulation may be used as a standalone session or incorporated into a broader bodywork plan.

The work is gentle, specific, and responsive. I do not follow a rigid protocol. Instead, I tailor the session to your body, symptoms, and goals.

FAQ

What should I wear for Visceral Manipulation?

Wear comfortable, flexible clothing. I will need to palpate and work with my hand on skin, which can be done simply by lifting the shirt up to the rib cage, and the pants may need to be lowered to the top of the pelvis. Avoid stiff jeans, thick belts, or restrictive waistbands.

Is Visceral Manipulation the same as abdominal massage?

No. Visceral Manipulation may include gentle work around the abdomen, but it is more specific than general abdominal massage. VM focuses on the mobility, motility, and connective tissue relationships of the internal organs.

Is Visceral Manipulation painful?

Visceral Manipulation is usually gentle. Some areas may feel tender or restricted, but the work should not feel forceful.

Can Visceral Manipulation help with posture?

Visceral restrictions can influence how the trunk, ribs, pelvis, and spine organize. While posture is affected by many factors, Visceral Manipulation may support posture by improving mobility and reducing tension patterns through the abdomen, diaphragm, and connective tissue system.
